5 players who emerged from IPL but couldn’t shine at the international stage

The leg-spinner came to the fore after his superlative efforts in the 2011 edition of IPL playing for Pune Warriors India. He picked up 16 wickets in 14 matches in the season but and the most eye-catching aspect of the bowling was the economy rate of just 5.46 which was the cheapest in the league. For his consistent lines and the tall stature, his bowling style was compared to that of Anil Kumble.

In 2011, Rahul made his ODI debut for India against West Indies where he bagged 3 wickets. He went on to play 3 more ODIs and 2 T20Is before disappearing from the international stage. He was later found positive for drugs and was banned by the BCCI. It affected the career of the right-hander immensely and the story was cut short even before starting.

He made his debut against Australia later that year where he scored unbeaten 12 runs. Tiwary played just 2 more ODIs aggregating 49 career runs and since then, he has been missing from the thick of things. Hailing from Jharkhand, the southpaw was once being dubbed as the next Dhoni for his similarities with the former Indian captain. But he faded away too soon and even in the IPL seasons that followed, he couldn't repeat the heroics.

#3 Ambati Rayudu

One of the most prominent players for Mumbai Indians over the years has been Ambati Rayudu. He has been a prolific run-getter for the franchise since 2010 and has been instrumental in team's success heavily. He was amongst the top 3 run-getters for the side for the initial 3 years that gave him a berth in the Indian ODI side for the tour to Zimbabwe in 2013. But in his international career so far, he has featured in only 34 ODIs and 6 T20Is. He still averages 50.24 in the 50-over format and did decently well in the short span but he was unlucky not to find more games with the national side. The 31-year-old is still one of the major players in the IPL and has a lot of cricket left in him

#4 Yusuf Pathan

Although Pathan had made his debut for the Indian team before the IPL when he played in the final of the 2007 World T20 against Pakistan. But his breakthrough year was certainly 2008 where he played a pivotal role in Rajasthan Royals' triumph in the inaugural edition of the league. The right-hander was at the peak of his powers where he decimated bowling attacks with his brutal power. Pathan represented India in 57 ODIs accounting for 810 runs at an average of 27 that included 2 centuries. He also featured in 22 T20Is where he scored just 236 runs which was well below par as compared to what he was able to achieve in the IPL. The explosive batsman is still a regular member of the Kolkata Knight Riders unit but he since 2012, he hasn't been picked to play for India again.

#5 Piyush Chawla

The leg-spinner is another player who had made his debut before playing in the IPL. He played his first Test for India in 2006 and the first ODI in 2007. But it was the IPL that gave him the recognition. Playing for Kolkata Knight Riders, he played crucial roles in his side's victories in 2012 and 2014. Currently, he is the fourth highest wicket-taker in the history of the league with 126 wickets to his credit. But his international career was limited to 3 Tests, 25 ODIs and 7 T20Is. The emergence of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja as the lead spinners didn't work in Chawla's favor and he last appeared for India in a T20I in 2012.
