Renowned cricket commentator Aakash Chopra has weighed in on the recent appointment of Ricky Ponting as the new head coach of Punjab Kings (PBKS) for IPL 2025. In his YouTube video, Chopra predicted that Ponting’s arrival could lead to a significant shift in the team’s overseas contingent, moving from a strong England influence to a more Australian-heavy lineup.
Chopra explained that the four prominent English players in the PBKS squad—Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Jonny Bairstow, and Chris Woakes—are likely to be released ahead of the IPL 2025 season. “What will you expect from Ricky Ponting? I feel the gathering of English players there will get removed. Everyone will be sent,” Chopra speculated, hinting that Ponting may favor bringing in Australian talent to the franchise, a trend observed during his previous coaching stints.
Ponting, who led Delhi Capitals (DC) for multiple seasons, has a history of working closely with Australian players. Despite frequent changes in management, the franchise has not been able to secure an IPL title, with their best finish being runners-up in 2014.
Chopra pointed out the franchise’s recurring pattern of changing captains and coaches, which may have contributed to their lack of success. “They have reached the playoffs and the final but have never lifted the trophy. Have they not won the trophy because they make so many changes or they are forced to make changes because they have not won the trophy—it’s the chicken and egg situation,” Chopra commented.
Ricky Ponting will be PBKS’s 11th head coach, a testament to the franchise’s instability in leadership roles. In addition to a new coach, PBKS will also need to appoint a new captain for IPL 2025, following Shikhar Dhawan’s recent retirement from international cricket. Dhawan, who started IPL 2024 as the team’s captain, handed over the reins to Sam Curran after sustaining an injury. Curran later left the team to join England’s squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup, leaving wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma to captain PBKS in their final game of the season.
