Aaron Finch Points Finger at RCB’s Auction Strategy and Player Management for IPL 2024 Struggles

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are staring down the barrel of another IPL season without a trophy. Despite boasting a star-studded lineup with Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, Faf du Plessis, Cameron Green, and Mohammed Siraj, they find themselves languishing at the bottom of the points table with just one win in eight matches.

Finch Highlights Lack of Quality Spin and Misused Green

2021 T20 World Cup winner and former RCB batsman Aaron Finch believes the problems for Faf du Plessis‘ team began at the IPL auction itself. He argues that RCB prioritized batting strength while neglecting the bowling attack, particularly a world-class spinner suited for Indian pitches.

“The lack of a world-class spinner, I guess it’s been proven in the game against KKR,” Finch told Hindustan Times on Star Sports Press Room. “Sunil Narine is a world-class operator, and he’s somebody who gets the job done day in and day out. It’s just that lack of a spinner there to be relied on consistently.”

Finch further criticized RCB’s management of Cameron Green, a player they acquired through a costly trade.  “I think they have got some issues with playing players out of position at times,” he said. “Cameron Green, to trade for him for such a big price and then bat him in the middle-order where he’s not as comfortable as batting at the top, is a strange move. You’re asking a guy to do a job he’s not comfortable with, so you’re not setting him up for success.”

Underperforming Stars Add to RCB’s Woes

Finch also acknowledged the underwhelming performances of established stars like Glenn Maxwell, who haven’t been able to deliver the impactful performances RCB needs. “And then obviously Maxi (Maxwell) hasn’t gone either, which hurts,” Finch said. “When you’re looking at match-winners and pure impact on the match, Maxi hasn’t quite done that this tournament.”

With their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, RCB will face a tough challenge against a strong Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) team in their next match. In their previous encounter this season, SRH posted a mammoth 287/3, a total RCB chased valiantly but ultimately fell short by 25 runs.
