Mumbai batter Shreyas Iyer played a brilliant innings, scoring a free-flowing double-century against Odisha in the Ranji Trophy. The match took place at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy in Mumbai on Thursday. Iyer reached this significant milestone with a boundary off Debabrata Pradhan, taking just 201 balls to complete his double hundred.

Iyer’s innings was nothing short of spectacular. He smashed 21 fours and eight sixes, dominating the Odisha bowlers throughout his innings. This knock marked Iyer’s third First-Class double century. Immediately after reaching his double hundred, he struck another four off Pradhan, surpassing his previous highest First-Class score of 202, which he made for India A against Australia in 2017.

This century also signifies Iyer’s return to form, as it is his second consecutive hundred. He had scored a ton against Maharashtra in the previous round but missed the match against Tripura due to injury.

Shreyas Iyer has been out of India’s Test squad since February 2024. He last featured in the Test series against England and subsequently lost his central contract. His most recent ODI appearance was against Sri Lanka, where India lost the series 2-0. Additionally, his last T20I match was in 2023 against Australia in Bengaluru.

Despite these setbacks, Iyer’s performance in the Ranji Trophy demonstrates his resilience and determination to reclaim his spot on the national team.

Iyer missed the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 due to a back injury but made a successful comeback for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the last edition of the tournament. Under his captaincy, KKR won their third IPL title by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in a one-sided final. However, KKR released him before the upcoming mega auction.

Shreyas Iyer is set to participate in the IPL mega auction scheduled for November 24-25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This year’s auction will see 1,574 players go under the hammer, including 1,165 Indian players and 409 overseas talents. The auction will be held at the Abady Al Johar Arena, also known as Benchmark Arena.

Franchises will have the opportunity to fill a total of 204 available slots in their squads, with each team allowed to build a roster of up to 25 players.
