Alastair Cook Lauds Jaiswal’s Fearless Century and Sledging
Former England captain Alastair Cook has applauded young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal for his fearless performance during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener at Perth Stadium.
Jaiswal, who registered a duck in the first innings, bounced back strongly to score a remarkable 161 in the second innings, marking his maiden Test century on Australian soil.
Cook, known for his composed demeanor, highlighted Jaiswal’s bold sledging of Australian pacer Mitchell Starc during the innings, describing it as a rare display of confidence from a 22-year-old.

Cook shared his admiration on TNT Sports, saying, “We’ve seen his celebration enough here, but it’s more enjoyable against Australia than England. And sledging Mitchell Starc, saying at a certain stage, I think he wasn’t on 100, he wasn’t on anything on a major score, but he’s telling him you’re bowling slow. And I’ve faced Mitchell Starc and he certainly doesn’t bowl slow,” Cook told TNT Sports.
“And if he was bowling slow, I’d keep my mouth shut and not wind him up, but have the confidence to do that as a 22-year-old. I think he scored the most runs as any Indian player up to after 15 test matches at the top of the order, which I’ll keep saying it, no one else believes me, it’s the hardest place to bat. What a classy player he is,” he added.
Jaiswal’s Century: A Test of Character
Jaiswal’s performance was not just a milestone but a testament to his adaptability and resilience.
After a tough start in the first innings, he made necessary adjustments to counter the Australian bowling attack.
Once settled, Jaiswal took the offensive, hitting Starc for a six and confidently remarking, “You’re bowling too slow.”
This approach not only disrupted Starc’s rhythm but also showcased Jaiswal’s ability to thrive under pressure.
His century played a pivotal role in India’s commanding victory, breaking Australia’s stronghold in Perth—a venue where they rarely lose.
Cook’s Take on Australia’s Defeat
Reflecting on the match, Cook expressed surprise at Australia’s collapse, particularly at Perth, where they are historically dominant.
“I was surprised. I was surprised that India have gone there and hammered Australia in what normally is a very hard place to go and play cricket, Perth. I know it’s not the WACA. I know it’s the new stadium, but still, historically, Australia don’t lose many games there,” said the 39-year-old. Cook remarked.
“I thought India was so brave. I thought that first, you know, the win the toss and bat on that wicket, you know, you look there, even though there’s only 150 they got, you know, the thought process to say, we’re going to take Australia on there. We know it’s going to be hard, but we think it’s going to be hard for both sides only, and then it’ll be a one-inning game,” he added.
India’s bold tactics and Jaiswal’s stellar knock left Australia reeling, handing them a 295-run defeat.
This victory sets a high bar for the ongoing series and underscores India’s growing confidence in overseas conditions.
