Aryna Sabalenka claimed her third Grand Slam title after an intense battle against Jessica Pegula at the US Open. In a match filled with twists, Sabalenka won 7-5, 7-5, adding this title to her collection, which includes two Australian Open victories.
Despite facing a 0-3 deficit in the second set, Pegula fought back to lead 5-3. However, Sabalenka’s determination saw her regain control, ultimately securing the match. The Belarusian struck 40 winners in a performance that echoed her dominance on hard courts, making her the first woman since Angelique Kerber in 2016 to win both hardcourt majors in a single season.
After the win, Sabalenka expressed her elation, saying, “I’m speechless. So many times I was close to the US Open title and finally I got it. Never give up on your dream.”
Pegula, who entered the tournament in great form after winning the Toronto title and reaching the Cincinnati final, praised Sabalenka. “She’s super powerful and isn’t going to give you anything. I’m just glad I was able to stay in there and keep taking opportunities,” Pegula remarked.
The match, witnessed by a star-studded crowd of 23,000, including Noah Lyles, Steph Curry, and Lewis Hamilton, saw both players showcase contrasting styles. Sabalenka’s aggressive play resulted in 25 winners and 23 unforced errors in the first set, while Pegula’s more conservative approach featured nine winners and 11 unforced errors.
In the second set, Pegula led 5-3 after mounting a remarkable comeback, but Sabalenka broke back to eventually take the set and the match. Sabalenka secured her victory when Pegula sent a tired shot long, marking a historic win for the 26-year-old Belarusian.
Sabalenka’s win solidifies her position as one of the top players in the world, further enhancing her legacy in the sport.
