Ashes 2023: Ricky Ponting Talks about David Warner’s form ahead of the fourth test

In the ongoing Ashes, David Warner‘s performance is a hot topic of debate as the southpaw struggles against experienced pacer Stuart Broad once more. Since he has only managed to score 141 runs in six innings, his future in the game’s longest format now appears to be grim. Since Broad has dismissed him 17 times overall and three times in this series, according to the former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, Warner’s struggle has turned into a mental one.

The 48-year-old said there has been a lot of discussion over Warner’s performance over the past few days, and he thinks that if it weren’t for Broad, there would not have been as much commotion. He believes, nonetheless, that the cricketer from Paddington should stay on the team because he would improve.

Ricky Ponting said

“I know there’s been a lot of chat the last couple of days since the end of Headingley and it’s more the fact that it’s Broad that’s getting him out, I think. I think if it was anybody else, the noise probably wouldn’t be quite as loud, but the fact that he struggled to get through the opening spells of Broad a few times in this series again, makes it a little bit more of a worry,” Ponting told in the latest episode of The ICC Review.

“When someone’s got you out 17 times, it does become as much a mental or probably more of a mental battle than it does a technical battle. But just thinking about the series, I’d be inclined to stick with David Warner,” he added.

Notably, if Australian management choose to bench Warner for the final two Test matches, they can turn to Marcus Harris. Harris received high praise from chief selector George Bailey prior to the series, so the team may decide to give him a chance. However, Warner possesses the crucial expertise because the visitors will be fervently trying to keep the urn.
