Ashwin and Sundar in Contention for Late World Cup Squad Entries, Hints Rohit Sharma

India’s Asia Cup triumph has left the cricketing world buzzing, but the excitement doesn’t end there. After securing the Asia Cup trophy in Colombo with a resounding 10-wicket victory over Sri Lanka, Indian captain Rohit Sharma dropped hints of potential additions to the World Cup squad.

In a press conference following the Asia Cup final, Rohit Sharma revealed that he has been in touch with certain players regarding the spin-bowling all-rounder role in the Cricket World Cup 2023 squad. This statement has sparked speculation that R Ashwin and Washington Sundar might be in contention for late entries into the World Cup squad.

Rohit said

“I think everyone is in the line with spin bowling all-rounders – I have been speaking to Ashwin as well on the phone so he is very much in the line so is Washi, we want those guys who can do the job with bat & ball”.

India had already named their provisional ODI World Cup 2023 squad, which included three spinners – Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel. However, with Axar Patel suffering an injury and being replaced by Washington Sundar for the World Cup final, there seems to be a degree of flexibility in the squad.

R Ashwin, a seasoned off-spinner and a proficient lower-order batsman, last played an ODI for India in January 2022. His inclusion would provide a wealth of experience to the squad, especially in high-pressure situations.

On the other hand, Washington Sundar, a young and promising all-rounder, has showcased his skills in both batting and spin bowling. His recent performances have earned him recognition, and his presence in the squad could add depth and versatility.

As India gears up for the Cricket World Cup 2023, Rohit Sharma’s hints have raised anticipation among fans and pundits alike. The final squad composition will be eagerly awaited, as it may feature late inclusions based on form and fitness, ensuring that India fields the strongest possible team in their quest for World Cup glory.
