Kusal Mendis

Where he made a fiery 92 off 84 balls, and fell short of a well deserved hundred.

He stepped up again, in the third match against Bangladesh where he got  a fifty to his name. In the must win match against the Asian Giant, Pakistan, Kusal led Sri Lanka’s batting charge while chasing 252. He 91 off 87 balls, and again failed to get a hundred to his name, but his team qualified for the finals of Asia Cup.

The final match of Asia Cup 2023, was played on Sunday between India and Home team Sri Lanka. The clash was totally one-sided, as India bowled the Lankans out for just fifty runs. They chased down the trivial target in merely 6.1 overs.

As the competition has come to its end, it’s time to look at the top three run-getters of the tournament.

Shubman Gill

With 302 runs, including two fifty-plus scores and a century, the prince of cricket, Shubhman Gill is the highest run-getter of Asia Cup 2023. He has consistently provided the Indian team with strong beginnings.

Gill failed to make a mark in the first match of Indian in the tournament against arch rivals Pakistan. In the very next match against Nepal, he along with Skipper Rohit Sharma drove India home with a ten wicket win. He managed to score 67 runs in this successful chase.

In the third match against Pakistan, Gill proved why he is referred as successor of King Kohli. He took on the premium pace trio of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf to score a blistering 58 off 52.

His 121-run innings against Bangladesh on a slow-turning track in the final match of  Super Fours was much praised by fans and experts. On Sunday, in the final of Asia Cup, Gill with his Shubman Gill with his 27 off 19 balls ensured that India chased down 50 runs to lift the Asia Cup.

Kusal Mendis

Sri Lankan wicket keeper Kusal Mendis is 32 runs behind Gill in the list of top run scorers. He finished the tournament as the second-highest run scorer with 270 runs. Like Shubman he failed to get a good start in the tournament. But came back in the very next match against Afghanistan. Where he made a fiery 92 off 84 balls, and fell short of a well deserved hundred.

He 91 off 87 balls, and again failed to get a hundred to his name, but his team qualified for the finals of Asia Cup.

Sadeera Samarwickrama

In third position is another Sri Lankan batter Sadeera Samarwickrama with 215 runs in 5 innings. He routinely scored runs for his team and has two fifty-scores to his name in the tournament.

He scored an important fifty in the first game for his team against Bangladesh, while they were chasing a score of 165 runs. His love affair for the Bangladeshi side was seen again. He scored a crucial 93 of just 72 balls, and missed out on a justified hundred to his name.

He scored a rather un-noticed 48 runs in chase of 252 against Pakistan in the must win contest. His contribution proved fruitful, as the home team won the nail-biter to secure their position in the finals of Asia Cup.
