In a significant development, the fate of the much-anticipated Asia Cup 2023 will be determined on the sidelines of the IPL final, according to BCCI Secretary Jay Shah. Several esteemed dignitaries from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) will be present at the IPL 2023 final, scheduled to take place on May 28 at the Narendra Modi Stadium. These dignitaries include the respective presidents of the cricket boards of Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka.
Asia Cup 2023 hosting decision to be made at IPL Final
During this momentous gathering, discussions will be held among the ACC officials to outline the future course of action for the Asia Cup 2023. Bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan has suffered due to strained political relations over the past decade, leading to matches being limited to multi-team events held at neutral venues.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed the same in an official statement. “The respective presidents of the Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka Cricket Boards will grace the IPL 2023 final to be held on May 28 at the Narendra Modi Stadium. We will hold discussions with them for outlining the future course of action in relation to Asia Cup 2023,” Shah said.
India’s Safety Concerns and Pakistan’s “Hybrid Model” Offer
In this context, India has expressed concerns about player safety and has ruled out traveling to Pakistan for the Asia Cup, which is scheduled for September. To accommodate India’s apprehensions, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has proposed a “hybrid model,” suggesting that matches involving India be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to formally respond to this offer.
While the specifics of India’s response are awaited, it has been reported that the BCCI intends to request the entire tournament be relocated from Pakistan. The BCCI is likely to present its viewpoint during discussions with ACC officials at the IPL final, seeking a resolution that ensures a safe and conducive environment for the Asia Cup.
