Australian Head Coach Andrew McDonald optimistic about Warner’s form ahead of the Ashes

Australia’s victory over India in the 2023 World Test Championship final provided the best possible lead-up to the Ashes 2023 series. The triumph serves as the ideal start to the lengthy summer ahead, which will see them face off against their oldest rivals, England, in the Ashes commencing on June 16.

The most impressive performance for Australia in the WTC Final 2023, according to head coach Andrew McDonald, was David Warner‘s 43-run effort in the first innings. When the Australian opener last travelled to England for the 2019 Ashes, Stuart Broad turned into his adversary and got rid of him seven times in ten innings. McDonald expressed his admiration for Warner’s performance in the WTC championship game.

Australian Head Coach said

“I thought Davey moved well in the first innings. He got strangled down the leg side. You look at that, and you say ‘a little bit of luck there and potentially that’s a bigger score’. But the way he moved, the way he played is exactly what we want,” McDonald was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

Warner only managed to score 95 runs in 10 innings at an average of 9.50 runs per innings during the most recent Ashes in England, with one fifty to his credit. Since 2021, when he has averaged 29, the southpaw has not been in the best of forms. Warner recently revealed his wish to end his Test career in Sydney in January 2024. In his last 17 innings, he has only recorded one 50-plus score.

The 36-year-old is unlikely to have additional opportunities in the format if he has another awful performance in England during the Ashes. In the meantime, McDonald remarked that batters today are more concerned with scoring runs than they are with surviving when discussing the opener’s problems in England. Therefore, mental clarity is more crucial.

“I don’t think survival comes into most batters’ minds these days. It’s more about how you’re going to score runs and what your method is going to be. Last Ashes series it was on average 2-20, so they’re going to be challenged again here. But as long as they are clear in the method, that’s the way to get success over five Test matches,” McDonald further said.
