Australia’s T20I squad is set for a fresh face as they prepare to take on South Africa in their upcoming match at Kingsmead in Durban on August 30. Cricket Australia has unveiled the playing XI for the first T20I, introducing three uncapped players – Spencer Johnson, Matt Short, and Aaron Hardie – into the squad to face the Proteas.
Leading the revamped Australian side is Mitchell Marsh, who will captain the team for the T20Is. The majority of the regular lineup will sit out the first fixture, giving these emerging talents a chance to showcase their skills on the international stage.
Among the newcomers, Spencer Johnson has garnered attention with standout performances. He impressed during the Sheffield Shield 2022/23 season, taking 16 wickets in just three matches at an impressive economy of 3.54. His remarkable performance continued in The Hundred 2023, where he delivered the most economical figures in the tournament, conceding just a single run in his 20 deliveries and securing three wickets.
Similarly, 24-year-old Aaron Hardie, a member of Australia’s preliminary World Cup squad, will make his international debut in the T20I against South Africa. The rest of the XI consists of Marsh, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, and Adam Zampa, who were part of Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign in November last year.
Australia’s preparations for the 2023 ODI World Cup have been marred by injuries to key players like Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, and Glenn Maxwell. Despite the challenges, the team remains focused on their upcoming fixtures, including a three-match ODI series against host team India after the multi-format series against South Africa.
