Bangladesh Captain Backs Shakib Al Hasan Amid Murder Accusation Discussions

Bangladesh Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto declared on Thursday, September 5, that his team will stand firmly behind star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan if any discussions arise regarding the murder accusations filed against him once the team returns from Pakistan. The accusations were brought by Rafiqul Islam, who filed a case at Dhaka’s Adabor police station, alleging his son’s murder amid the political unrest in the country. The charges also named Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has since fled the country, and other prominent lawmakers.

Hossain expressed the team’s unwavering support for Shakib, praising his dedication and passion for the game. “Every player supports Shakib Bhai. We all know how dedicated he is to playing and how passionate he is about the game. He always thinks of the team first,” Hossain said, emphasizing the unity of the squad during this challenging time.

Despite the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) rules prohibiting players with criminal charges from participating in international matches, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has not taken any action, stating that the investigation is still in its early stages. Shakib, who was previously a lawmaker in the Sheikh Hasina government, played both Tests in Pakistan and is set to feature in a County Championship game for Surrey.
