Bangladesh cricket players have rallied around their teammate Shakib Al Hasan, who is facing a murder case in connection with the recent civil unrest that led to the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The case, filed by Rafiqul Islam, the father of one of the victims, accuses Shakib and 155 others of murder amidst the political turmoil that resulted in Hasina fleeing the country.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has expressed strong support for Shakib, describing him as a significant asset for Bangladesh. 

In a heartfelt Facebook post, Shanto highlighted Shakib’s contribution to Bangladeshi cricket over the past 17 years and emphasised the team’s unity in this challenging time. 

“He’s been raising the name of Bangladesh in the world,” Shanto said, underscoring the emotional impact of the accusations on the team.

Veteran batsman Mushfiqur Rahim also voiced his support for Shakib. On Facebook, Rahim called Shakib a “champion” and affirmed his commitment to stand by him through these trying times. 

Rahim criticised the allegations, expressing confidence in Shakib’s integrity. The team’s solidarity reflects their commitment to supporting Shakib while the case unfolds.

The ongoing controversy comes against the backdrop of Bangladesh’s recent victory over Pakistan in a Test match, which Shakib contributed to significantly with his performance. 

Murder Case on Shakib 

A murder case has been filed against Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan in connection with violence during recent protests in Bangladesh. The case, filed by Rafiqul Islam at Dhaka’s Adabor police station, also names former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and several ex-ministers.

Shakib Al Hasan, who was playing in Canada for the Global T20 league from July 26 to August 9 and previously in the USA for Major League Cricket, is among 147 people accused in this case. He was not in Bangladesh on the day of the protests, August 5.

The complaint alleges that some of the accused fired at students protesting on Ring Road in Adabor, leading to the death of Rubel, Mr. Islam’s son, two days later. The case comes amid significant political changes in Bangladesh, including a new head of the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
