On August 25, Najmul Hossain Shanto’s Bangladesh team achieved a remarkable 10-wicket victory over Shan Masood’s Pakistan in the first Test at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. This historic triumph was, however, quickly overshadowed. Within a day of their success, the Bangladesh team faced a significant blow from the International Cricket Council, marking a challenging turn of events following their impressive win.
Bangladesh and Pakistan Both Lost WTC Points:
The ICC has imposed penalties on both teams for slow over-rates. Bangladesh has been fined 15% of their match fee and docked 3 WTC points. Similarly, Pakistan faces a heftier penalty, with a 30% reduction in their match fee and a loss of 6 WTC points. These fines come as a consequence of both teams’ failure to maintain the required over-rate during their recent Test match.
Captains Shan Masood and Najmul Hossain Shanto admitted to the slow over-rate breaches and accepted the proposed sanctions, making formal hearings unnecessary. During the Test, Pakistan fell six overs short, resulting in a deduction of six World Test Championship (WTC) points, while Bangladesh, falling three overs short, lost three points.
As a result, Pakistan will stay in eighth place on the WTC points table. However, Bangladesh has dropped from sixth to seventh, falling behind South Africa due to this penalty. The adjustments reflect the impact of over-rating compliance on team standings in the ongoing championship.

Shakib al Hasan Also Faced Consequences:
Veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has received a 10% fine of his match fee and a demerit point for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. The breach occurred in the 33rd over of the second innings when Shakib threw the ball at Rizwan, who had moved out of the way. This action was deemed inappropriate and led to the imposition of the fine and demerit points. Shakib’s disciplinary issue highlights the need for players to maintain sportsmanship and adhere to conduct regulations during matches.
