Bangladesh Veteran Mahmudullah Riyad Announces Retirement from T20I Cricket

Bangladesh’s veteran all-rounder Mahmudullah Riyad has officially announced his retirement from T20 International cricket. He made this announcement during a pre-match press conference ahead of the second T20I against India. This decision marks the conclusion of a remarkable journey that began in 2007.

In the press conference, Mahmudullah shared that he had discussions with his family and the Bangladesh board regarding his decision to retire. “Before coming to India, I informed the board about my decision. The India vs Bangladesh 3rd T20 in Hyderabad will be my last international game in the shortest format,” he stated.

A Glorious Career in T20Is

Mahmudullah has been a vital part of Bangladesh’s T20 setup, participating in 139 out of the team’s 177 T20Is. Over his 17-year career, he has amassed an impressive 2,295 runs and taken 40 wickets. His batting average stands at 23.48, with a strike rate of 117.74. Notably, his highest score in T20Is is an unbeaten 64.

In addition to his personal achievements, Mahmudullah has captained Bangladesh in 43 T20 matches, including leading the team during the 2021 T20 World Cup held in the UAE. Mahmudullah holds the record for captaining his team the most number of times in T20 Internationals. His leadership and experience have been crucial for the team during various international competitions.

Fellow cricketer and Bangladesh Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto emphasized the importance of the India series for Mahmudullah, stating, “Regarding Riyad [Mahmudullah] bhai (brother), from what I understand, this series is very important for him.” Shanto’s remarks highlight the emotional weight this series carries for Mahmudullah as he prepares to bid farewell to a format where he has left an indelible mark.

During the press conference, Mahmudullah too reflected on his retirement, stating, “I think it is the right time to move on from this format for me and the team. Especially with the World Cup coming up in less than two years. I will concentrate on the one-day game”
