Sri Lanka tour of Bangladesh was postponed on Wednesday due to the pandemic. The three-Test matches that Bangladesh was scheduled to play in Sri Lanka were to be a part of the ICC World Test Championship.
ICC reveals the reason
Owing to the current pandemic situation, the International Cricket Council postponed Bangladesh’s upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. There were three Test matches scheduled for them to be played in the island country as a part of the ICC World Test Championship. According to Bangladesh Cricket Board, the players were not too keen to tour Sri Lanka next month due to the ongoing pandemic.
In an official Tweet, the International Cricket Council today announced, “Bangladesh’s tour to Sri Lanka, scheduled to take place next month, has been postponed.” Bangladesh’s home Test series against New Zealand was also postponed earlier this month for the same reason. The chief executive of the board had clearly cited the situation as the reason. “In the present COVID-19 pandemic scenario, hosting a full cricket series in August 2020 will be a challenge in terms of preparations and we cannot take chances with the safety and health of players, support staff and related stakeholders. Under these circumstances, the BCB and NZC have felt that the best way forward would be to defer the series.”
SLC announces the news
Sri Lanka Cricket also informed in an official release, “Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that the Bangladesh Cricket Board has informed SLC that a conducive environment has still not arrived for their players to take part in an international cricket series, purely due to the lack of preparation for its players, caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.”
The statement further disclosed that both boards mutually agreed to postpone the tour in a later date.”Hence, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and Sri Lanka Cricket have agreed that Bangladesh National Team’s tour of Sri Lanka which was scheduled to be held during July 2020 will not take place and will be deferred to a mutually planned later date.”
