Former Pakistani cricketer Basit Ali took a sharp dig at Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto after his team’s recent seven-wicket loss against India in the Kanpur Test. The defeat marked a 2-0 whitewash for Bangladesh, with India completing the series win on October 1. Basit Ali sarcastically commented that Shanto may have thought Bangladesh was facing Pakistan again, referencing their recent win against Pakistan and contrasting the two teams’ performances.
Basit Ali’s Comparison Between India and Pakistan
Basit Ali is a former Pakistani cricketer who played for the national team in the 1990s.
Known for his aggressive batting style, he was a middle-order batsman who represented Pakistan in both Test matches and One Day Internationals (ODIs).
Though his international career was relatively short, spanning from 1993 to 1996, Basit Ali showed promise, particularly in ODIs.
He is remembered for his strong performances against teams like the West Indies and Australia.
In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Basit Ali emphasised how India’s quick victories over Bangladesh showcased their superiority not only over Bangladesh but also Pakistan.
He pointed out that while Bangladesh pushed Pakistan to the final day in their previous series, India wrapped up the Tests in just two days of actual play.
Basit highlighted this as a clear indicator of the strength gap between India and Pakistan, despite Bangladesh’s earlier success.
Basit’s remarks followed Shanto’s pre-series comments, where he confidently expressed Bangladesh’s ambition to defeat India.

However, the series saw India dominate in both matches, underlining their superiority over Bangladesh.
UPCA’s Narrow Escape and BCCI’s Potential Reaction
The Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) faced criticism during the Kanpur Test due to weather interruptions, with two days of play lost to rain and wet outfield conditions.
Despite these setbacks, India managed to secure a win on the fourth day. Basit Ali opined that the UPCA must be relieved, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might have taken strict action had the match ended in a draw.
He credited India’s aggressive playstyle for achieving a result, while reinforcing that even rain couldn’t save Bangladesh from defeat.
