BCCI Former Chief Selector Tells Of R. Ashwin As ‘Deadly’, India’s 2nd Highest Wicket Taker At 424 Wickets

India’s legendary spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been included on the Indian side against Australia for the 3-match ODI series premiering 22nd September. India’s clash with the 5 time World Cup champions on 5th October will be India’s last bilateral assignment ahead of the ODI World Cup.

R. Ashwin is one of India’s finest spin bowlers and in this regard, his addition to the squad has made the fans excited to witness him play. Interestingly, the Management has announced that India will have 2 squads for the upcoming series. R. Ashwin is probably a replacement card for Axar Patel as the latter suffered a hamstring injury earlier this month.
Though Ashwin stands as an outside chance in case any of the spinners is unable to play due to injuries, the country is ready to witness Ashwin’s ability to play across this format.

Close to 500 wickets

With being India’s second highest wicket taker, R. Ashwin has already proved himself as an exceptional bowler. The top ranker bowler has picked up 424 wickets in all and has played 118 international matches so far.

While speaking to Star Sports, former BCCI Chief Selector MSK Prasad made visitors aware of his potential and said “This is very good news, I said it previously as well, Ashwin will be a handy option for the Indian team that too in home conditions.”
Hoping Ashwin’s entry to the World Cup squad as well, Prasad further added, “He is close to 500 wickets in all three formats combined in Indian conditions. In all teams these days, there are at least 3-4 left handers, so against left handers he will be deadly. I hope he can do well against Australia and get selected in the World Cup squad as well.”

Which players have been put to rest ahead of the WC?

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and top batsman Virat Kohli have been put to rest for the first two matches of the ODI Series ahead of the World Cup. All rounder Hardik Pandya and left arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav have also been rested owing to the same purpose.

On Ashwin’s addition to the squad, captain Rohit Sharma reiterated only a few days ago that he has been talking to him on phone about his role. “Axar’s injury was a last minute injury and since then, everyone has been on the loop”, said Rohit.
