The Board of Control for Cricket in India has witnessed an epic surge in its revenues from the recently concluded Indian Premier League 2023. It mobilized a surplus of ₹5,120 crore, 116% more against the ₹2,367 crore from the previous IPL 2022. Their total income skyrocketed by 78% year on year to ₹11,769 crores. A spate of new media rights and sponsorship deals were at the center of all this stellar financial performance.

This growth was fuelled by the new media rights deal, worth ₹48,390 crore for the 2023-27 cycle. Media rights income jumped 131% to ₹8,744 crore from IPL 2023, as against ₹3,780 crore from IPL 2022. Franchise fees increased by 22% at ₹2,117 crore, and sponsorship revenue inched up 2% to ₹847 crore.

BCCI’s financial juggernaut: Breaking records and building reserves

If so, the financial health of the BCCI, reflective of its status as the world’s richest and most influential cricket body, has only become stronger. A bank balance for the board, going up to ₹16,493.2 crore at the end of FY23 from ₹10,991.29 crore in the earlier year, along with a surplus for FY23, going up by 38 percent to ₹3,727 crore, very much underlined the strong position the BCCI is in on the financial front to undertake initiatives pertaining to global cricket and development at the grassroots level.

Coupled with this, the BCCI diversified into several other avenues, among which was the first-ever edition of the Women’s Premier League in 2023, adding a surplus windfall of ₹377 crore. WPL earned ₹636 crore from media rights, franchise fees, and sponsorships, against expenditure of ₹259 crore. This addition cements the fact that the BCCI is certainly on a clear path to dominance and financial juggernaut status across the cricketing world.
