Harmanpreet Kaur’s tenure as India’s T20I captain is under scrutiny after India’s shock exit from the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup. BCCI is expected to consider a leadership change.
BCCI Set to Replace Harmanpreet Kaur as India’s T20I Captain After Early World Cup Exit – Report
In the aftermath of India‘s shocking group-stage elimination from the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly set to reconsider Harmanpreet Kaur’s future as captain.
India finished third in Group A, missing out on a semi-final spot after a disappointing campaign in the United Arab Emirates.
“The BCCI will certainly discuss whether to have a new captain on board going ahead. The Indian board has provided everything that the team wanted, and we feel it’s high time a new face leads the team going ahead. Harmanpreet will continue to be an important member of the team, but the BCCI feels it’s time for transition,” a source was quoted as saying by Indian Express.
Despite being the favourites to lift the trophy, the Women in Blue struggled in crucial matches, leading to defeats against Australia and South Africa.
With four points from four matches, India’s fate was sealed when New Zealand crushed Pakistan, dashing any hopes of a late qualification.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s Captaincy Under Scrutiny
Harmanpreet Kaur, who has been leading the Indian T20I side since 2016, has been one of the team’s most experienced players.
Under her leadership, India reached the finals of the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup and the semi-finals in 2018 and 2023.
However, her inability to inspire the team in pivotal matches during the 2024 edition has raised questions about her leadership.
According to reports, while there is no threat to her position as a player, the BCCI is seriously considering a change in captaincy.
The Indian cricket board has provided the team with resources and backing, but the lack of consistent performance at major tournaments has prompted the board to look at new leadership ahead of future assignments.
BCCI’s Transition Plans
The BCCI is set to meet with the selection committee and head coach Amol Muzumdar before announcing the squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting on October 24.
While Harmanpreet is likely to retain her spot in the team, a few members of the support staff could face changes.
The board is focused on grooming a fresh leadership team to lead India through future challenges.
The possible transition marks a significant moment for Indian women’s cricket as the team prepares to rebuild for the future.
