The Indian Women’s Cricket Team made history as they clinched India’s first ever gold medal in cricket at the Asian Games 2023 being held in Hangzhou, China. The Indian women’s team took over Sri Lanka and defeated them by 19 runs to win their first gold medal for India in cricket at the Asian Games. Their dominant displays of performance are winning hearts and becoming an inspiration for the next generation of women players to come.Â
A historic achievement: Jay Shah
The women’s cricket team has been receiving accolades from various dignitaries. Among them, one such dignitary is the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) secretary, Jay Shah, who felicitated the team for winning gold and appreciated their efforts. He took to his official ‘X’ handle and posted, “The Indian Women’s Cricket team wins gold at the #AsianGames with a dominant win over Sri Lanka, led by 18-year-old sensation Titas Sadhu’s bowling brilliance (3 for 6). Congratulations to the team and support staff for this historic achievement! @BCCIWomen”.
Along with Jay Shah, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur also congratulated the women’s team for claiming gold. He appreciated the efforts made by the team, stating that it was a testament to the team’s grit and spirit.
A remarkable feat indeed
After having won the toss, team India chose to bat first and scored 116 for a loss of seven wickets in 20 overs. Restricting Sri Lanka to a mere score of 97/8, the women in blue outwitted the opponent team by turning the tracks. The 18-year-old sensation Titas Sandhu unleashed a magic spell by knocking down three wickets in just four overs. Her brilliant bowling delivery really helped India secure the gold medal. Among the batters, Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues played special knocks, as they both scored 46 off 45 and 42 off 40, respectively.
