India and South Africa are all set to kick off a 3-match T20I series followed by a 2-match Test series on South African home ground. The tour is set to commence on December 10 with the Indian team leaving for South Africa on December 6. Today, the selectors will announce the Indian squad for the South Africa tour and along with that BCCI and Ajit-Agarkar led committee will initiate discussions with Rohit Sharma on his T20I cricket future. The discussions will follow with Rohit Sharma’s take on whether he wants to continue with white-ball cricket or not as the T20 World Cup is not far away which is set to be held next year in 2024.
Selectors want Rohit to continue with the format
As the Indian squad for the upcoming series against South Africa is to be announced today, it has likely emerged that selectors would be more happy if the 36-year old skipper chooses to continue with his stint in T20I cricket. Earlier, Rohit had made a decision to only continue with Test Cricket and ODIs so selectors are not sure about his decision on T20I future.
Hardik’s prolonged injury
In the 2023 ODI World Cup, all-rounder Hardik Pandya sustained an injury and now he is taking longer than expected to recover from it. Well, it is a matter of concern for the management as ahead of the T20 World Cup, it becomes necessary for Pandya to acquire leadership skills before the tournament.
With Rohit still to decide on his future with white-ball cricket, Virat Kohli also approached and informed the BCCI that he won’t be available for selection in the squad for the T20 series against South Africa as he wants to go on an indefinite break. However, he affirmed that he will likely return for the Test series to be held later in the month of December.
