Reports suggest that Rahul Dravid is the frontrunner to be the next head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. As per an official from the board, the BCCI is set to approach former India cricket captain for the role.
Rahul Dravid is likely to take over after Ravi Shastri is done with his coaching stint with Indian men’s cricket team at the end of the upcoming T20 World Cup. Dravid has always been a prime contender for the role and a favourite of the board. He has the experience of coaching the Under 19 and India A team that went on to produce a number of bright youngsters. Dravid is currently the head of National Cricket Academy and his close association with the domestic cricket has helped in the growth of Indian cricket. Recently, when Indian cricket team was in the UK to play the World Test Championship final followed by matches against England, Dravid was the interim coach of the second-string team led by Shikhar Dhawan that toured Sri Lanka.
As per a report in The Indian Express, a BCCI official said, “We wanted the candidate whom we feel is best suited for the job to agree first (to apply for the job).” He continued, “We don’t want a situation where we get applications but no one is seen as ideal. It will be embarrassing for the board and for the candidates too. So it’s better to find a suitable candidate first, till then Dravid can be interim coach,”
However, Dravid earlier was approached for the role but he showed more interest in age group cricket. The BCCI is yet to put an advertisement for the coach’s job. There will be a formal process but if Rahul Dravid says yet to the proposal, Indian cricket team will get the next coach.
