Australia’s allrounder Cameron Green faces a precarious situation regarding his participation in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Following his recent back injury sustained during the UK limited-overs tour, surgery has emerged as a potential option, significantly diminishing his chances of playing in the series against India.
Green returned home after experiencing back soreness following the third ODI against England at Chester-le-Street. Upon his return, he underwent scans in both England and Australia. However, Cricket Australia’s (CA) medical team has not yet finalised a recovery plan, leaving fans and selectors uncertain about his status.
Potential Surgery and Recovery Plans
At just 25 years old, Green has previously battled stress fractures but had not faced such issues since 2019. If surgery is deemed necessary, it would rule him out for the entire summer season. Conversely, if a non-surgical recovery plan is adopted, there exists a slim possibility that he could return as a batter only. The timeline for this recovery remains undetermined.
Cricket Australia’s medical and high-performance teams are currently exploring various recovery strategies. Reports suggest that officials are preparing for a summer largely without Green as a bowling option. This scenario could lead to significant adjustments within the Australian batting lineup.
How will Cameron Green’s Absence Impact Team Selection?
If Green is unavailable, Australia will need to reshuffle its batting order. Steven Smith is expected to move back to No. 4, which could open opportunities for other players to step into the opener position. Candidates like Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft, and Matt Renshaw are all in contention, having been considered last summer before Smith took on opening duties.
Harris has already made a strong impression this season, scoring 143 runs for Victoria against Tasmania on a favourable pitch at the Junction Oval. Meanwhile, Bancroft and Renshaw struggled in their first innings during a match between Western Australia and Queensland at the WACA ground.
