Former India Women’s captain Mithali Raj has taken to Twitter to express her delight and excitement for the inaugural day of the Women’s Premier League. Mithali Raj is a part of the Gujarat Giants camp, acting as their mentor for the first season of the WPL.
Mithali’s Gujarat Giants is all set to create history by being a part of the first-ever match of the WPL. The Giants will play Mumbai Indians at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai today. Viewers can catch the action live on the Sports 18 Network or on the Jio Cinema app from 7:30 p.m.
Tweeting about her excitement, Mithali wrote, “The day that promises a revolution in women’s cricket is finally here. Cannot wait to see @GujaratGiants stepping out to feature in the first-ever #WPL2023 encounter tonight. My best wishes to all involved, let’s have a spectacular tournament. 👍”
Mithali Raj, who retired last year, is the longest-serving captain of the Indian team. She captained the Women’s National Cricket Team from 2004 to 2022 and took them to the finals of ICC events on multiple occasions.
Even before the auction of the Women’s Premier League, Mithali was roped in by the Gujarat Giants team management as their chief mentor. “While I will not be playing, I will be fortunate enough to serve as a mentor and advisor for the Gujarat Giants. There is no disappointment about the fact that I missed out on playing in it, my journey as a cricketer was different and I was able to play my part in the evolution of the sport. I am very happy to see women’s cricket get to where it is and excited to be part of the eco-system,” Mithali had written in a column for the ICC when she had agreed to become the mentor for the franchise.
