Background

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league. It was established in 2008 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The league started after India won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. Lalit Modi, then BCCI Vice-President, played a key role in creating the IPL. The goal was to combine cricket with entertainment and commercial interests.

The IPL features franchise teams that represent different cities and states in India. It began with eight franchises but has since expanded to ten teams. The league usually runs from March to May, allowing fans to enjoy exciting matches during the summer. Each team bids for players through an auction system, creating a competitive atmosphere that attracts top talent from around the world.

Over the years, the IPL has become extremely popular. It is now one of the richest and most-watched cricket leagues globally. Governing Council 

The IPL 2025 Governing Council will play a crucial role in this season’s tournament. This edition marks a significant change in leadership. Jay Shah, the current secretary of the BCCI, will become the chairman of the ICC. He will start his term on December 1, 2024. His appointment is expected to influence the IPL positively.

The council includes key representatives from various cricketing bodies. V. Chamundeswaranath represents the Indian Cricketers’ Association (ICA). CM Sane is the nominee from the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG). Arun Singh Dhumal and Avishek Dalmiya will continue as chairman and treasurer until IPL 2025 concludes.

This governing body oversees all aspects of the league. It ensures smooth operations and effective decision-making. IPL 2025 Format 

The IPL 2025 Format will follow a structured and exciting approach. The tournament will feature ten teams divided into two groups of five. Each team will play a total of 14 matches during the group stage. They will face the other four teams in their group twice, once at home and once away. Additionally, each team will play against four teams from the other group once and face one team from the other group twice.

After the group stage, the top four teams will qualify for the playoffs based on their aggregate points. The IPL 2025 Format includes a playoff system consisting of two Qualifiers and one Eliminator. The first Qualifier will be contested between the top two teams from the group stage. The winner of this match advances directly to the final.

The Eliminator will feature the teams finishing third and fourth in the points table. The winner of this match will then face the loser of Qualifier 1 in another match called Qualifier 2. The winner of Qualifier 2 will secure a spot in the final.

The points system awards two points for a win, while no points are given for a loss. In case of a draw or no result, both teams earn one point.  

IPL 2025 Schedule

The IPL 2025 Schedule has been officially announced, marking an exciting season ahead. The tournament will kick off on March 14, 2025, and conclude with the final on May 25, 2025. This edition will feature a total of 74 matches, maintaining the same number as the previous three seasons.

Each team will play a total of 14 matches in a round-robin format. Teams will compete against the other four teams in their group twice, once at home and once away. They will also face one team from the other group twice and the remaining four teams once. This format ensures a balanced competition among all franchises.

The IPL Governing Council has carefully crafted the schedule to enhance fan engagement. Matches will be held in iconic stadiums across India, from Mumbai to Kolkata. The matches are set to start at 7:30 PM IST, with some day matches beginning at 3:30 PM IST.

The IPL 2025 Schedule also includes double-header days to maximize viewership and excitement. The playoffs will follow the group stage, featuring two Qualifiers and one Eliminator. This structure keeps fans on the edge of their seats as teams vie for a spot in the final.

IPL 2025 Broadcasting

The IPL 2025 Broadcasting landscape is set to undergo significant changes. This edition will be the first to air after the merger of Viacom18 and Disney’s Star India. The new entity formed from this merger is called JioStar. This change aims to streamline broadcasting and enhance the viewer experience.

Star India’s Star Sports and Viacom18’s JioCinema have acquired the broadcasting rights for IPL from 2023 to 2027. Following the merger, both broadcasting assets will be managed by JioStar. JioCinema will transition to Disney+ Hotstar, which previously held digital rights from 2018 to 2022. This shift is expected to provide fans with a more integrated viewing experience.

The IPL 2025 Broadcasting will include live telecasts on various Star Sports channels. Fans can catch all the action on channels like Star Sports 1, Star Sports 2, and Star Sports Select. For those preferring online streaming, matches will be available on the JioCinema app and website.
