Chris Woakes, the seasoned England fast bowler, has expressed his willingness to take on the role of leading the bowling attack in the upcoming overseas Test series in Pakistan and New Zealand

Despite a modest record in away Tests, Woakes is not deterred, stating that he would not “shy away” from the challenge.

At 35, Woakes has stepped up as the leader of England’s bowling attack after James Anderson and Stuart Broad, two of England‘s most prolific bowlers, retired.

This summer, Woakes has been impressive, taking 14 wickets at an average of 19.07.

His performance on the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka at Emirates Old Trafford, where he claimed 3 for 32, has further solidified his position as a key player for England.

Experience and Determination

Woakes has been a reliable bowler for England, especially at home, where he averages 21.57 in 32 Tests.

However, his away record, with an average of 51.88 in 20 Tests, has often been a point of concern.

Despite this, Woakes believes his experience and newfound skills make him a valuable asset for England’s upcoming tours.

He emphasised the importance of experience, stating, “Naturally as you get older, the more Test cricket you play, you pick up new skills, you have more experience to fall back on and are a little bit wiser.”

While Woakes has not played an overseas Test since March 2022, he remains optimistic and ready to contribute if selected.

“I certainly wouldn’t rule myself out, and obviously, that will be a discussion for probably further down the line, but I’m certainly not ruling myself out,” Woakes remarked, highlighting his commitment to the team.

Batting Contributions

Apart from his bowling, Woakes’ ability to contribute with the bat adds to his value in the team.

With Ben Stokes absent, Woakes has been promoted to bat at No. 7, a role he has worked hard to fulfil.

“I’ve worked hard on my batting my whole career… and it’s an extra string in the bow which allows you to potentially be selected ahead of someone else,” Woakes said.

Woakes’ determination to excel in both bowling and batting positions him as a crucial player for England in the upcoming overseas Tests.

His willingness to take on responsibility and his drive to improve make him a strong contender to lead England’s bowling attack this winter.
