Cricket Gains Popularity in Brazil

Cricket is making significant strides in Brazil, especially in Poços de Caldas. The sport has been introduced in 52 public schools in the city, engaging around 5,500 children in a dynamic cricket project. This initiative, highlighted by Otempo Sports, reflects a growing interest and enthusiasm for cricket among Brazilian youth. The project aims to nurture young talent and popularize the sport in a country traditionally dominated by football. This remarkable development signifies cricket’s expanding influence and potential in Brazil’s sporting landscape.

In the late 19th century, British rail workers introduced various sports, including cricket, to South America. Many of Brazil’s initial football clubs, like Flamengo, started as rowing and cricket clubs. The Rio Cricket and Athletic Association and the Payssandu Cricket Club were among the early promoters of football.

The Liga Metropolitana de Football, founded in 1905, saw its first tournament the next year, with clubs like Fluminense, Botafogo, and Bangu competing. Remarkably, two clubs had ‘cricket’ in their names: Payssandu Cricket Club and Rio Cricket and Athletic Association.
