Reports Says BCCI Rejects Five of Gautam Gambhir’s Coaching Picks, Including Morne Morkel

After the T20 World Cup, Rahul Dravid ended his tenure as Team India’s head coach. As Dravid was not interested in renewing his contract, BCCI opted for a new head coach. Former Indian cricketer and KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir announced the new head coach of Team India. After securing the post, BCCI said to give him a free hand to choose coaching staff. But he is having a tough time finalizing those sports.

Gambhir’s Hard Time:

Gautam Gambhir is struggling to finalize his support staff, facing more resistance from the BCCI than his predecessors did. Recently, his recommendation of Morne Morkel for the bowling coach position was turned down by the board.

Earlier, Gambhir had suggested R Vinay Kumar and Laximipathy Balaji for the same role, but they were also not approved during the initial discussions between the BCCI and the new head coach of Team India. Despite his efforts, Gambhir has not yet succeeded in getting his preferred choices accepted.

Board’s Rejection Of Fielding Coach Recomandation:

The BCCI has not only rejected Gautam Gambhir’s recommendations for the bowling coach but also for the fielding coach. His choices, Ryan ten Doeschate and Jonty Rhodes were also turned down by the board.

Although there is no question about the abilities of these candidates, they all share a connection with Gambhir through the IPL franchises. Gambhir either captained them or worked with them when he was part of the IPL coaching staff.

Gambhir Will Start His Journey Soon:

The limited over series of India against Sri Lanka is set to commence very soon. Gambhir is all set to take charge of that tour. But the coaching staff selection is still undone. BCCI is rejecting Gambhir’s choice. The only choice of Gambhir to select Abhishek Nayar as the batting coach is still not rejected.

Traditionally, the BCCI allows the head coach to choose their support staff freely, as seen with Anil Kumble, Ravi Shastri, and Rahul Dravid. Shastri even ignored the Cricket Advisory Committee’s recommendations, and Dravid selected his own staff. However, Gambhir’s choices are being rejected, raising concerns as the Sri Lanka series approaches.
