Cricket West Indies Awards Multi-Year Contracts to Top Players, Including New Opportunities for Women

In a groundbreaking move, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced the awarding of multi-year contracts to its elite cricketers, encompassing both men’s and women’s teams. This initiative not only reflects a commitment to nurturing talent but also aims to provide stability within West Indies cricket. Notable recipients include men’s ODI captain Shai Hope and women’s white-ball captain Hayley Matthews.

New Era for West Indies Cricket

The decision follows a new four-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in January 2024 between CWI and the West Indies Players Association (WIPA). The contracts will commence on October 1, 2024, with varying durations: players on one-year contracts will conclude on September 30, 2025, while those awarded multi-year contracts will extend until September 30, 2026.

Miles Bascombe, CWI’s director of cricket, emphasized the importance of communication between the board and players. “CWI has committed to maintaining open and honest dialogue with players, and being practical about the realities of the modern game,” he stated. He further noted that the acceptance of these multi-year contracts signifies mutual clarity, confidence, and commitment.

Key Players in the New Contract List

Among the contracted players, senior fast bowler Kemar Roach is a notable absence. Roach is currently in discussions regarding a dual role as both player and mentor as he transitions into the next phase of his career.

Batter Kavem Hodge has secured his first central contract following an impressive performance in which he scored a critical first-innings 71 during West Indies’ first Test victory in Australia in nearly three decades. He later achieved his maiden Test hundred against England at Trent Bridge in July.

Allrounder Roston Chase also joins the list as a new entrant after being instrumental in West Indies‘ journey to the Super Eight stage during the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Meanwhile, young talent Tagenarine Chanderpaul has missed out on a central contract but will instead take up a franchise retainer contract with the Guyana Harpy Eagles.

Women’s Contracts: A Step Forward

The awarding of multi-year contracts to women cricketers marks a significant advancement for women’s cricket within CWI. Allrounder Hayley Matthews, who captains the women’s team, is among those receiving these contracts. Her leadership and performance have been pivotal for the Windies women, who have made substantial strides on the international stage.

In addition to Matthews, allrounder Ashmini Munisar received her maiden contract with CWI, highlighting the organization’s commitment to developing emerging talent in women’s cricket. This move is expected to provide stability for female cricketers and encourage them to focus on their game without financial uncertainties.
