In a recent statement, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanathan disclosed intriguing details about MS Dhoni‘s future in the Indian Premier League (IPL). As Dhoni prepares for his 18th IPL season, fans are eager to know whether this season will mark the iconic captain’s final bow. According to Viswanathan, Dhoni has been retained as an uncapped player by CSK for INR 4 crore, ensuring his return to Chennai in 2025.
CSK CEO on Dhoni’s Future Plans
During an interaction on Provoke TV with Ambati Rayudu, Viswanathan shared that Dhoni remains secretive about his career decisions, leaving fans and the team in suspense.
However, he hinted that Dhoni’s dedication to CSK and his love for the Chennai fan base might lead him to play his final game in the city.
“As far as Mahi bhai (brother) is concerned, you know he keeps everything to himself. It comes out at the last moment only. Knowing the passion he has for CSK, and also knowing the following he has, and he also mentioned in one of the interviews that he’ll play his last game in Chennai, we’re hoping that he will continue as far as CSK is concerned. As long as MS wants to play, the doors are open. Knowing him, his commitment, and his dedication, I’m sure he’ll always take the right decision,” said Viswanathan during a discussion with Rayudu on Provoke TV.
Uncapped Player Retention Rule Reinstated
The IPL board reinstated the “uncapped player” rule for 2025, allowing players with no international games for over five years and without a BCCI contract to be classified as uncapped.
This change permitted CSK to retain Dhoni for another season. With Dhoni, CSK also retained key players like Ravindra Jadeja (INR 18 crore), Shivam Dube (INR 12 crore), Matheesha Pathirana (INR 13 crore), and Ruturaj Gaikwad (INR 18 crore), utilising INR 65 crore of their INR 120 crore budget.
As Dhoni readies himself for the new season, the question of whether this will be his last remains. For now, CSK fans are thrilled to have their “Thala” back, hoping to witness a fitting end to his legendary career.
