As Australia prepares for the first Test against India at Perth’s Optus Stadium, a scheduling conflict has emerged for their bowling coach, Daniel Vettori. He will depart the team during the match to attend the IPL auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The IPL Mega Auction is set for November 24-25.
A Unique Coaching Role
Vettori holds a rare position in international cricket. He serves as Australia’s bowling coach across all formats. However, he does this while also being the head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred. His dual commitments highlight his value as a coach, which Cricket Australia recognizes by allowing him to pursue franchise roles alongside his national duties.
A spokesperson for the Australian team expressed support for Vettori’s decision. He stated, “We are very supportive of Dan’s role as Head Coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad. Dan will complete final preparation for the first Test before attending the IPL auction. He will then be with the team for the remainder of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.”
Impact on the Test Series
The decision to prioritize the IPL auction over a Test match underscores a growing trend in cricket where franchise commitments sometimes take precedence. However, Vettori is not alone. Fellow coaches Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer, who are also involved in IPL franchises, will miss parts of the Test series due to their auction commitments.
This situation marks a significant moment as it is the first time Vettori will leave a Test match midway to attend an auction. Previously, he managed to fulfill his national duties while attending auctions between matches.

Preparations and Support Staff
Despite this disruption, Vettori was present with Australia’s squad during their initial training session at WACA. He worked closely with the bowling unit. He prepared them for challenges posed by India’s batting lineup, particularly focusing on facing Ravindra Jadeja.
To ensure continuity during Vettori’s absence, Cricket Australia is bringing in additional support. Former Australian batter Michael Hussey and ex-allrounder Jim Allenby, both experienced coaches, are already working with the team. Additionally, Lachlan Stevens, CA’s national development coach, will join the squad as further support when Vettori leaves.
