David Warner has been named Sydney Thunder’s captain for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season, marking his leadership return after Cricket Australia lifted his ban imposed following the 2018 Sandpaper-gate scandal. Warner aims to foster team spirit and mentor young talent as the Thunder set out for Season 14.
In a notable leadership comeback, David Warner has been appointed as the captain of Sydney Thunder for the 14th season of the Big Bash League (BBL), starting December 15. This decision comes soon after Cricket Australia lifted the leadership ban imposed on Warner following the 2018 Sandpaper-gate scandal. Warner, who was then Australia’s vice-captain, had faced sanctions that kept him out of leadership roles, but with the ban lifted on October 25, the door opened for his return.
Expressing excitement about his new role, Warner highlighted his commitment to building camaraderie within the team, a crucial element he believes contributes to success on and off the field. “Captaining the Thunder again this season means a lot to me. I was part of the team from the start, and now to be back with that ‘C’ next to my name feels fantastic. I’m looking forward to leading from the front and sharing my experience with the young talent coming through,” said Warner.
Warner shared, emphasising his eagerness to mentor emerging players within the squad.
Rebuilding Team Spirit and Leadership
Warner stressed the importance of fostering a positive environment where team members can relax and bond.
He aims to encourage the Thunder squad to form strong connections, whether during team meals or outings, to build trust and unity. “Leadership off the field is just as crucial. I want to create an environment where we can all take a break from the game, bond, and enjoy ourselves. Whether it’s over a team meal, out on the golf course or engaging with our fans in Western Sydney, it’s all about building camaraderie and staying grounded,” said Warner.
Tribute to Former Captains
Warner also expressed gratitude toward Chris Green and Jason Sangha, who captained Sydney Thunder in his absence.
He praised Green’s leadership and acknowledged Sangha’s contributions before his injury, noting both as players he will rely on for guidance throughout the season.
“I want to compliment the way Greeny (Chris Green) led from the front. He’s an exceptional talent with fantastic leadership qualities. Jason Sangha, too, before his injury. I gained great insight from both, and I know they’re guys I can lean on this season,” said Warner.
Warner’s appointment is a significant chapter in his career, symbolising redemption and new beginnings in Australian cricket.
Fans eagerly await the Thunder’s performance in the upcoming season as Warner brings his experience and dedication back to the forefront.
