De Kock’s retirement: T20 money influences and South Africa prevails

Protea Wicket Keeper batter Quinton de Kock has announced his retirement from ODI cricket. He bid a final goodbye to ODI cricket after the 2023 ODI World Cup. his retirement in his early 30s is creating a buzz in the cricket world. He decided to continue playing T20 cricket for South Africa. 

In the last home series before his retirement, while talking to the media de Kock talked about some important points. He admitted that the influence of T20 league money influenced his decision to retire from ODI cricket.  He also added even after those influences, His priority would be South Africa.

Quinton’s sayings:

He said,” I am not going to sit here and deny that it doesn’t. It helps with my decision. I have tried to keep my loyalty to the team, which I think I have done well. I think I have represented  the proteas badge very well over my career.”

Later he also said,” T20 events- I am not going to deny that there is a lot of money, and coming to the end of your career, guys want to get their final top-up before their career finishes. Any normal person would do it anyway. If I was not that loyal, I would have done it five years ago when it took off. Now I am older, and with me coming to the downslope of my career, it’s time.”

Down memory lane:

Later the batter was asked about his favourite cricket memories down the line. He mentioned 178 against Australia in 2016 as his best ODI knock. He also mentioned their win against Sri Lanka by 1-0. He also recalled his first ODI century against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi. 

Three centuries in a row against India will be top of his list. He said,” I have a lot of good memories along the way, things you can’t just forget. Later he said,” The guys know I am an elephant, I don’t forget. There are things I don’t forget. I remember every last bit of detail about everything. It’s some skill I have just developed”.

His final innings in the home series didn’t go well. He scored 27 in 39 balls. To date, he played 144 ODI international matches. A few will be added in the World Cup. but this Cricketer will always be remembered.
