Teenage cricket sensation Swastik Chikara, who was left warming the bench for Delhi Capitals throughout the IPL 2024 season, made headlines with a blistering performance in the ongoing Uttar Pradesh T20 League. Playing for Rinku Singh‘s Meerut Mavericks, Chikara smashed 10 sixes in a stunning 27-ball 85, leading his team to a commanding 50-run victory over Kashi Rudras in a rain-shortened match on September 2.
Chikara’s Explosive Knock
The young opener’s innings was a masterclass in power-hitting. After Meerut Mavericks lost an early wicket, Chikara took charge, accelerating the innings with ease. His blitz included 10 massive sixes and four boundaries, with his half-century coming off just 17 balls. His onslaught was particularly devastating in the fifth over, where he hit four consecutive sixes off Karan Chaudhary. Chikara eventually fell in the eighth over after propelling his team to a formidable total of 118/3 in just nine overs.
Kashi Rudras’ Collapse
In response, Kashi Rudras crumbled under the pressure of a steep target. Their chase never took off as they lost wickets in clusters, with their top order collapsing to 19/5 within the first four overs. Despite a late resistance from Yashovardhan, who scored an unbeaten 28, Kashi Rudras could only manage 66/7, falling short by 50 runs according to the DLS method.
Swastik Chikara’s Impressive Run
Chikara’s explosive innings not only earned him the ‘Player of the Match’ award but also solidified his position as the second-highest run-scorer in the UPT20 League, with 251 runs in six matches, including three half-centuries. His consistent performances have made him a standout player in the tournament, showcasing the talent that caught the eye of IPL scouts last season.
Despite being picked by Delhi Capitals for his base price of Rs 20 lakh in the IPL mini-auction, Chikara did not get a chance to make his debut. However, his recent form in the UPT20 League suggests that he could be a player to watch in the upcoming IPL season, especially as teams look toward retention and future investments in young talent.
