After finishing the IPL 2024 on a disappointing note, Delhi Capitals brought a major change before stepping into the IPL 2025. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has stepped down from head coach’s post. After that, Sourav Ganguly’s name was speculated as the next head coach of the franchise. However, as per the source, the franchise is unlikely to appoint him in Pointing’s position.
Ponting Stepped Down and Speculations:
Delhi Capitals announced on Saturday that they have parted ways with head coach Ricky Ponting. The former Australian captain led the franchise for seven seasons, starting in 2018. Under Ponting’s guidance, Delhi Capitals enjoyed successful seasons, notably reaching the IPL final in 2020 held in UAE. His departure has sparked speculation about his successor.
Speculation is rife that Delhi Capitals might consider former India captain Sourav Ganguly as their new head coach after Ricky Ponting declined the role. Ganguly has expressed interest in taking on coaching for the first time in his career, fueling rumors about his potential appointment.
He said, “Why not me? Let’s see if I can do it or not. We need to rope in some new players. I wanted to bring in England‘s new star, Jamie Smith, for DC’s SA20 side (Pretoria Capitals). He was even ready to come in, but then England will be busy for their India tour at that time.”
Ganguly is Unlikely to be the Coach:
According to reports, Delhi Capitals are hesitant to appoint Sourav Ganguly as both Director of Cricket and head coach. Ganguly, currently DC’s Director of Cricket, also oversees the team’s sister franchises: the ILT20 team Dubai Capitals and the SA T20 league side Pretoria Capitals.
DC is considering Gautam Gambhir as a potential candidate due to his successful mentoring career. Gambhir guided the Lucknow Super Giants to playoffs in his initial two seasons and later steered the Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL victory after a ten-year gap. His track record makes him a strong contender for the role.
The source said, “The team needs a very hands-on coach who follows the circuit very aggressively. Like Gautam Gambhir does. It’s no surprise that he has been so successful as a mentor. He keeps track of players – both international and domestic.”
Urging for a new setup in IPL 2025:
According to the report, Delhi Capitals (DC) are in discussions with two former World Cup-winning cricketers for the head coach position, but no final decision has been made yet. The DC support staff and scouting team are set for a revamp ahead of the 2025 season.
The source said, “The only person who had played some sort of cricket in the scouting team was Jagrit Anand (white-ball games for Delhi). After he was let go, the remaining two Shyantanu Chokhani and Adhishwar haven’t played any serious cricket. And no wonder the returns of the scouting team have been very underwhelming. Is there one cricketer who comes to mind which was unearthed by the scouting team? No,”
The recently ended IPL season was a setback for Delhi Capitals. Even though Rishabh Pant held the help of captaincy after recovering from injury, the team struggled. They ended the tournament in the 6th position. They are yet to lift the IPL trophy. Before starting the IPL 3025 journey. They are all set to start with a new setup.
