Did CSK Make a Mistake Allowing Rachin Ravindra to Train in CSK Academy Ahead of India Series?

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has come under fire for allowing New Zealand cricketer Rachin Ravindra to practice at their academy ahead of the Test series against India. This decision has sparked criticism from former CSK player Robin Uthappa, who emphasized that the franchise should prioritize the country’s interests over its players.

Rachin Ravindra Trained at CSK Academy

Ravindra recently emerged as a standout performer for New Zealand in their 3-0 series win against India. He was the highest run-scorer for his team, amassing 256 runs in three Tests at an impressive average of 51.20, which included a century. His remarkable performance was aided by his training at the CSK Academy, where he prepared for the Indian conditions.

Despite being released by CSK before the IPL auction, Ravindra was allowed to practice at the academy. This opportunity proved beneficial as he acclimatized to the local playing conditions, leading to his success in the Test series.

Uthappa’s Criticism of CSK’s Decision

Robin Uthappa expressed his concerns regarding CSK’s actions on his YouTube channel. He stated that while it is commendable for franchises to support their players, there should be limits when it comes to national interests.

“Rachin Ravindra came here and practiced at the CSK Academy. CSK is a beautiful franchise that will always look after its franchise players,” Uthappa said. “But a line has to be drawn where the interest of the country comes ahead of your franchise players, especially when he is a foreign player and comes and plays against our country.”

Uthappa emphasized his love for CSK but suggested that they reconsider similar decisions in the future. He added, “When it comes to the country, there should be a line somewhere where we do not cross that line.”

Uthappa’s Praise for Ravindra’s Performance

Despite his criticism of CSK’s decision, Uthappa praised Ravindra’s performances throughout the series. He highlighted Ravindra’s century in Bengaluru as one of the best innings played by an overseas player in India.

“On the basis of that preparation, Rachin Ravindra batted brilliantly,” Uthappa remarked. “It was one of the best knocks by an overseas player. He then showed that he is the future of New Zealand cricket.”
