The pandemic already made a lot of sporting events uncertain all across the globe. The men’s T20 World Cup scheduled to be run at the end of the year in Australia is also assumed to be uncertain at present. A source revealed what ICC is thinking over the same to a leading daily.
The story of the World Cup
The 13th edition of Indian Premier League got postponed for an indefinite period. A lot of speculations suggested that IPL might be played in October-November if the men’s T20 World Cup gets postponed too. The men’s version is scheduled to be held in Australia which has sealed its borders for six months till September 30 to combat the pandemic. On the other hand, the tournament’s beginning date is October 18. Even if everything gets normal, less than a month may not be enough time to prepare for such a huge event.
While events like Tokyo Olympics, Wimbledon already got either cancelled or postponed, now all eyes on the T20 Cricket World Cup 2020. ICC has not taken any call on the same but expected to quite soon. Meanwhile, Times of India spoke to a source close to the developments regarding the same and the person revealed ICC will not take any decision till August at least.
The source reveals
The source explained that public health is the first priority and ICC is taking a close eye on the situation. According to him, the International Cricket Council will wait for the next few months to understand the situation. With the hope of the condition getting improved in the near future, the call will be taken in August.
“Right now, things look bleak, and people’s health is the first priority. However, what if the situation improves in a few months’ time? What if the ICC announces that the T20 World Cup is postponed in May itself, and things improve a couple of months down the line, and cricket’s governing body realizes that it took a hasty decision. The ICC will take time to decide on the fate of this event, till as late as August. Don’t expect any announcement before that.”
Presently the global cricket body will go according to the plan as per the scheduled dates. “As of now, everything will proceed as per plan and assuming that the tournament will be held as per its original dates. So, all other preparations by the ICC’s Local Organising Committee (LOC) in Australia, which is already in place, will be on in full swing.”
