Team Great Britain could be formed for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, combining Scottish and English players, as cricket makes its return to the Games after a long absence.
Team Great Britain
The England Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Scotland are exploring the possibility of combining to form Team Great Britain for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Discussions are in the early stages, but there is optimism that English and Scottish players could unite for the Games, where cricket will return after 128 years.Â
“With the Los Angeles Olympics four years away, it’s very early stages, but we’re talking to Team GB and Cricket Scotland about the next steps we need to take,” said an ECB spokesperson.
This scenario echoes the 2012 London Olympics when a combined football team from England, Scotland, and Wales competed. Scotland’s players could benefit from this arrangement if their national team doesn’t qualify independently.
Cricket’s Come Back
The quadrennial game, Olympic is set to make a comeback of Cricket after 128 years in Los Angeles Summer Olympics 2028.
After the 1900 Olympics,Cricket was removed from the Olympics primarily due to logistical and scheduling challenges and loss of interest among the people for the game.
Additionally, the nature of cricket, with its long format and complex scheduling, made it difficult to fit into the multi-sport event’s timetable.Â
There was also a lack of global representation which contributed to its removal.
The sport’s return to the Olympics in 2028 reflects a renewed interest and effort to include cricket in the global sporting arena.
