Former England captain Eoin Morgan has stirred the pot ahead of the T20 World Cup, offering his insights on India’s chances and revealing a surprising selection preference.
India’s Strength Impresses Morgan
Speaking on Sky Sports, Morgan lauded India’s depth and overall strength, placing them firmly in the favorites’ category. “The strongest side even with injuries throughout the tournament is India,” declared Morgan. “Their strength and depth is absolutely incredible,” he emphasized.

However, Morgan did express a different approach to the squad selection. “The only decision I would have had differently and if I was selecting the squad, I would have had Shubman Gill over Yashasvi Jaiswal,” he revealed. Their IPL connection at the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) seemingly influenced Morgan’s preference. “I have played alongside him, I know how he thinks. I know how he works,” he explained.
Leadership Potential a Key Factor
Morgan went further, highlighting Gill’s leadership qualities as a valuable asset. “I feel he’s a future leader within that side and I think in big moments, in World Cups the more leaders the better. Even if he’s sitting on the sideline, you still need inspiration from here and there, a sense of positivity,” he elaborated.
Atherton Raises Concerns About India’s Recent Form
While Morgan expressed confidence in India, former England captain Michael Atherton offered a cautionary perspective. “It’s also an irony, because everyone talks about the IPL and how it has improved India’s T20 cricket,” Atherton pointed out. “The irony is that the only time they have won is pre IPL,” he added, highlighting India’s recent struggles in major tournaments despite being favorites.

The discussion further delved into India’s recent T20 performances. Nasser Hussain and Atherton specifically mentioned India’s heavy defeat to England in the 2021 T20 World Cup semifinals.

Despite these concerns, Morgan remained optimistic about India’s chances. He acknowledged their potent batting lineup, stating: “They are favourites for me, the quality they have on paper, if they produce it I think they can beat anybody quite well in the tournament.” He additionally pinpointed Shivam Dube as a potential X-factor with his explosive hitting.
