Ruturaj Gaikwad’s omission from India’s Test squad for the Australia series has raised accusations of favouritism by BCCI, leaving fans outraged over his career’s handling.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced India’s 18-member squad for the upcoming five-Test series against Australia.
A notable omission sparking online debate. Maharashtra’s Ruturaj Gaikwad, a promising batter known for his consistent domestic form, was left out in favour of Bengal’s Abhimanyu Easwaran. Fans have expressed frustration over the decision, accusing BCCI of favouritism and asserting that the omission could harm Gaikwad’s career trajectory.
The five-Test series, part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, is set to begin on November 22 in Perth.
India faces the pressure of defending an 18-series unbeaten home record following their recent contest against New Zealand. Gaikwad’s exclusion has not only disappointed fans but also brought attention to his history of being sidelined in pivotal series.
Gaikwad’s Domestic Performance Overlooked
Gaikwad, who has consistently performed well in domestic competitions like the Duleep, Irani, and Ranji Trophy, was expected to be part of the Test squad.Â
The batter’s recent form includes 472 runs at an impressive average of 47.2, featuring a century and three half-centuries.
However, the selectors chose Abhimanyu Easwaran, who is also in exceptional form, scoring four centuries in his last four first-class matches.
This is not the first time Gaikwad has missed an opportunity despite being in good form.
In 2023, he was initially selected as a reserve for the World Test Championship final but was replaced due to personal reasons. Similarly, his selection for the West Indies tour last year did not yield a chance to play.
Fans React to BCCI’s Decision
Fans voiced strong opinions on social media, with many feeling that BCCI’s choice shows favouritism and a lack of regard for Gaikwad’s contributions.
The 27-year-old, who captained India to an Asian Games gold this year, has missed multiple chances to cement his place in the squad due to frequent last-minute changes.
Despite his consistent domestic performance and leadership in international tournaments, Gaikwad has faced repeated exclusions, which fans argue could stunt his growth in Test cricket.
