Following England Exit, Matthew Mott Joins Sydney Sixers as Assistant Coach, Replaces Cameron White

In a major move, Matthew Mott, the highly acclaimed former head coach of the England Men’s and Australia Women’s cricket teams, has joined the Sydney Sixers as an assistant coach. Mott, who guided the Australian women’s team to ODI World Cup glory in 2022 and back-to-back T20 World Cup titles in 2018 and 2020, has signed a three-year contract with the club.

Reuniting with Familiar Faces

Mott’s return to Sydney marks a homecoming of sorts, as he embarks on a new chapter in his illustrious coaching career. The city holds a special place in his heart, having started his coaching journey with the New South Wales Blues in 2007. Now, he will reunite with Rachael Haynes, a key member of the Australian side he coached to remarkable success, in her role as the Sydney Sixers’ General Manager.

During his tenure with the Australian women’s team, Mott oversaw a period of unprecedented success, including the team’s triumph at the 2022 ODI World Cup and back-to-back T20 World Cup victories in 2018 and 2020. His most recent achievement was guiding the England Men’s team to the T20 World Cup championship in 2022.

Excited for the Challenge

Mott expressed his delight at joining the Sydney Sixers, stating, “Having started my coaching journey in Sydney many years ago, it’s a place that evokes both great memories and a comforting sense of familiarity, which I’m looking forward to. The idea of being an assistant to Greg Shipperd, who I have a tremendous amount of respect for, really appealed to me.”

Rachael Haynes, the General Manager of the Sydney Sixers, emphasized the club’s excitement at securing Mott’s services, saying, “We couldn’t be more pleased to have ‘Motty’ committed for the next three years with the club. When the opportunity arises to bring a coach of Motty’s calibre into your ranks, it’s a no-brainer. We know what a fantastic resource he will be for our playing group.”

Strengthening the Sixers’ Coaching Staff

Mott’s appointment as assistant coach sees him replace Cameron White, who was recently named the head coach of the Melbourne Renegades. He will work alongside the experienced Greg Shipperd, the Sydney Sixers’ head coach, to guide the team’s performance in the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season.

In the recent BBL draft, the Sixers retained the services of James Vince, fending off interest from the Renegades. They also made a surprise pick by selecting Yorkshire leg-spinner Jafer Chohan with their final selection.
