The America’s National Cricket League (NCL) has announced the appointment of Haroon Lorgat, the former CEO of the International Cricket Council (ICC), as its new commissioner. This strategic move aims to enhance the popularity of cricket in the United States, a country where the sport is still in its developmental stages.
A Visionary Leader
Lorgat, who served as ICC CEO from 2008 to 2012, has a rich background in cricket administration and a proven track record. During his tenure, he oversaw three World Cups and played a pivotal role in implementing significant developments such as the Decision Review System (DRS) and strengthening anti-corruption measures. His leadership is expected to bring a wealth of experience and insight to the NCL as it seeks to establish itself on the global cricket stage.
“I’m privileged to take on this role with the National Cricket League at such a transformative moment,” Lorgat stated. He emphasized cricket’s potential to inspire new players and connect fans across the U.S., highlighting the league’s commitment to sustainability and global accessibility.
Inaugural Sixty Strikes Tournament
Under Lorgat’s leadership, the NCL will launch its inaugural Sixty Strikes Tournament, featuring a new 60-ball cricket format approved by the ICC. Scheduled to take place from October 4 to 14 at the University of Dallas, this tournament marks a significant milestone as it represents the first national sports league partnership with a university in America. The NCL anticipates attracting an audience of around 4,000 attendees daily.
Arun Agarwal, chairman of the NCL, expressed confidence in Lorgat’s vision: “With the prestigious ICC endorsement and our strategic partnership with SEE Holdings championing sustainability, we are already reshaping the future of cricket in America.”
Commitment to Sustainability
The NCL has also partnered with SEE Holdings, a Dubai-based leader in sustainability and innovation. This collaboration aims to integrate eco-friendly practices into league operations. The NCL is committed to becoming a carbon-neutral event by 2030, with initiatives such as using solar energy at venues and pledging to plant trees for every boundary and six runs scored during matches.
The upcoming tournament will feature an impressive lineup of top-tier players from around the world, including cricket legends like Shahid Afridi, Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik, Shakib Al Hasan, and Chris Lynn. Additionally, renowned veterans such as Wasim Akram, Sir Vivian Richards, and Sanath Jayasuriya will serve as mentors and coaches for emerging talents.
