The young Tushar Deshpande was first noticed by all after a brilliant Cooch Behar Trophy run. He scalped 21 wickets in just four games in the Cooch Behar Trophy that helped him catch the eyes of Mumbai selectors. He debuted in the first-class debut for Mumbai in the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy. Since his first match against Tamil Nadu, he has never looked back. He then went on to make his List A debut in the 2018-19 Vijay Hazare Trophy and his fifer against Bihar helped Mumbai reach the semi-finals. His 2/30 in the final helped Mumbai claim the title.
Things to know about Tushar Deshpande
1.) The 23-year-old speedster lost his mother last year at a hospital in Mulund after she was defeated by ovarian cancer. Deshpande was about to join his squad next day for the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy 2018-19 knockouts against Karnataka at the Holkar Stadium, Indore. Nobody expected him to report at work but the Shivaji Park prodigy went after passion amid all emotional turmoil. He always said how his parents had been there for him since the beginning and how his mother wanted him to play for India.
2.) Tushar Deshpande was a part of controversy during the selection of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy last year. Despite being the second-highest wicket-taker (19 wickets) in the previous edition of the same tournament he was not picked by the Milind Rege-led senior selection committee. This did raise few eyes and eventually, two Mumbai selectors were sacked for the same. Deshpande was recalled after that. He ended with nine wickets in nine games.
3.Deshpande first appeared for Delhi Capital‘s selection trials in 2017. Late the franchise roped in the right arm fast bowler for Rs 20 lakh at the player auction ahead of IPL 2020. Deshpande who was a ball boy during the inaugural edition of Indian Premier League said in an interview with Sportskeeda, “I used to go for the Mumbai leg of IPL 2008 as a ball boy with my Under 13 teammates. That time players like Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya were still playing. Seeing them from the boundary rope’s distance used to be a big moment for us.”
4.) Pacer Tushar Deshpande is going to be the first cricketer from Kalyan in Thane District (Maharashtra) to feature in the Indian Premier League. He has recently recovered from a hamstring injury and expected to have a good debut season in the UAE. With 31 wickets in 20 T20 matches so far, Deshpande does have the ability to impress one and all with his speed and skill.
