Former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik has expressed confidence in Gautam Gambhir‘s appointment as India’s head coach, stating that Gambhir’s aggressive nature will positively impact the team. Gambhir replaced Rahul Dravid following India’s T20 World Cup win in 2024. Despite a mixed start to his coaching stint during the white-ball series against Sri Lanka, Karthik believes Gambhir’s approach will help him connect with the players.
Gambhir’s Red-Ball Challenge:
The Test series against Bangladesh will be Gambhir’s first major test in red-ball cricket.
While Gambhir has been part of numerous T20 tournaments, his coaching skills in the Test format remain untested.
Dinesh Karthik pointed out that this series will be a new experience for Gambhir, stating, “He has been a part of numerous T20 tournaments. But this Test series will be completely new for him as a coach.”
Karthik expressed confidence in Gambhir’s ability to handle the challenges, given his experience and understanding of the game.
Karthik highlighted that Gambhir’s aggression has always been about protecting his players.
He said, “His aggression has generally come out in protection of his players, and that is something the current lot of players will enjoy.”
Gambhir will face his first challenge in the longest format when India takes on Bangladesh in the upcoming home Test series.

Bangladesh’s Challenge in India:
Bangladesh comes into the series on the back of a historic 2-0 win against Pakistan. However, Karthik believes that defeating India in their home conditions will be a tough task for the Bangladeshi team.
He noted, “India in India is a different kettle of fish to beat. Many teams have come to India and found it challenging, and Bangladesh will also find its challenges.”
Karthik also acknowledged that while the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia later in the year will be a significant challenge for India, he expects the team to show resilience.
