Gautam Gambhir Says He Would “Love To Coach The Indian Team” Amid Speculations Of Him Being The New Head Coach

The BCCI had earlier opened their doors for applicants who would be interested to play the role of team India‘s next head coach. This step was taken as the current coach, Rahul Dravid‘s tenure is soon to end after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

With this, a Google forms link was shared by the official X handle of BCCI. Several cricket fans and pranksters had jokingly applied for the position, using fake names as well.

Fans and experts request Gambhir to be the next head coach

Many experts had been speculating the involvement of veteran cricketer and ex-politician Gautam Gambhir in this whole scenario. A lot of Indian cricket fans had been speculating as well as requesting Gautam to apply for the position.

Gautam was the mentor of IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, a team that won the IPL 2024 cup. Gambhir also used to be a captain for the team in the past and had taken them to victory twice.

Seeing all of this, people have a lot of trust in Gambhir’s skills and there is a common agreement amongst fans that he might take the Indian Cricket Team to new heights.

“Would love to coach the Indian team” says Gautam

According to reports, the BCCI has approached numerous applicants to apply for the role of head coach. A slew of international personalities, including LSG coach Justin Langer have openly refused to take on the post due to the massive workload, leaving relatively few Indian candidates.

With this, speculations of Gambhir being the next coach have gotten bigger. Even after refusing to answer questions related to this topic several times, Gambhir opened up while interacting with students at the Medeor Hospital in Abu Dhabi.

“I have not answered this question, although a lot of people have asked me. But I have to answer you now. I would love to coach the Indian team.” Gambhir said.

“There is no bigger honor than coaching your national team. You are representing 140 crore Indians and those across the globe as well,” He added.

It is to be noted, that in case Gambhir goes ahead to coach the Indian Cricket Team, it would take up around 9 to 10 months of work every year, and the KKR mentor would have to prematurely end his stint with the ShahRukh Khan owned franchise.

The next Indian head coach will be given a contract until the end of 2027, and will have the responsibility of managing all three formats of cricket. This is because the BCCI does not wish to separate the coaches for red-ball and white-ball cricket.
