Green Park Stand Deemed Unsafe for IND vs BAN Test, Capacity Limited

The upcoming second Test between India and Bangladesh at Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium faces concerns over safety, with one of the stands declared unsafe. As per reports, Stand C of the stadium has been deemed “dangerous” by the Uttar Pradesh Public Work Department (PWD), which has warned that the stand cannot handle large crowds. The match is scheduled to start on Friday, but seating arrangements have already been adjusted to avoid potential risks.

Floodlights and Safety Concerns

In addition to the issues with Stand C, the floodlights at Green Park Stadium are another concern.

Reports suggest that several bulbs in one of the floodlights are not functioning properly.

This raises the possibility of poor visibility, similar to when India last played a Test in Kanpur against New Zealand in 2021, where bad light played a role in a drawn match.

Despite three years passing, the floodlight issue remains unresolved, adding to the list of worries for the upcoming game.

According to the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA), only 1,700 tickets will be sold for Stand C, which has a total capacity of 4,800 seats.

This decision comes after an inspection by PWD officials, who noted that the stand could not withstand the weight of fans if they were to celebrate heavily, such as when Rishabh Pant hits a six. “This part of the stadium is in dire need of repair,” said a PWD engineer.

Ownership of Green Park Stadium

The management of Green Park Stadium also complicates matters, as the stadium is not directly controlled by the UPCA.

It is owned by the state government’s sports department, which has led to delays in maintenance and upgrades.

In contrast, the UPCA operates from the modern Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, which offers much better facilities and is favoured for most domestic and international fixtures.
