As the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) prepare for the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction, uncertainty looms over the future of their legendary former captain, MS Dhoni. Recently returning from a vacation in the USA, Dhoni has yet to communicate his decision regarding extending his IPL career, leaving the franchise in a state of anticipation.
Dhoni’s Leadership Transition
Dhoni stepped down from his captaincy role before the start of IPL 2024, handing over the reins to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Despite his leadership, CSK struggled during the season and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Dhoni continued to play as a wicketkeeper-batter but faced challenges due to ongoing injuries that have plagued him for the past two years. His movement was notably restricted last season due to a knee issue that required surgery, and reports indicated he was still carrying an injury during IPL 2024.
In terms of performance, Dhoni batted lower down the order and contributed with several impactful cameos, but his overall involvement was limited. As speculation about his retirement continues, CSK is keenly awaiting Dhoni’s call regarding his future with the team.
Awaiting BCCI’s Retention Rules
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce player retention rules soon, which will significantly influence CSK’s strategy moving forward. According to sources quoted by The Indian Express, “We are yet to hear from him. Once the BCCI makes a formal decision on the number of retentions, we will have a clear picture.”
The retention rules were initially anticipated to be announced by the end of August but have faced delays. The BCCI is now expected to release these details around its Annual General Meeting scheduled for September 29. Teams must finalize their retention lists by November 15 ahead of the auction in December.

Dhoni’s Future Considerations
Dhoni has been non-committal about his IPL future, citing multiple factors that will influence his decision, including fitness and retention rules. He stated earlier this year during an event in Hyderabad: “There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court. So, once the rules and regulations get formalised, I will take a call, but needs to be in the best interest of the team.”
Given these circumstances, CSK finds itself at a crossroads regarding its wicketkeeping position and overall team strategy. If Dhoni decides to retire or step back from active play, CSK will need to identify potential replacements ahead of the auction.
