In a recent interview, former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh provided thoughtful reflections on the captaincy styles of MS Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly. Having made his international debut under Ganguly’s leadership, Yuvraj discussed how both captains influenced his career and the development of younger players in the Indian cricket team.
Ganguly’s Support for Young Players
Yuvraj praised Sourav Ganguly for his ability to instill confidence in young talents such as Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan. He noted that Ganguly was instrumental in providing opportunities to players who were still finding their footing in international cricket. “I think I got on the side when Saurav was the captain, and he kind of like gave us a lot of confidence in terms of… a lot of chances because we were younger, we were not consistent,” Yuvraj explained during his appearance on Club Prairie Fire’s YouTube channel.
He emphasized that Ganguly’s faith in younger players allowed them to develop into match-winners. “He kind of stuck to us for a bit because he knew that these guys could be match-winners in the future,” Yuvraj added, referring to himself, Sehwag, Bhajji, and Zaheer Khan.

Dhoni’s Strategic Leadership
Transitioning to MS Dhoni’s captaincy, Yuvraj highlighted the strategic depth Dhoni brought to the team. He emphasized that Dhoni always had a “Plan B” ready, which was crucial for adapting to changing match situations. “What I liked about Dhoni was that MS had already had a plan B. Like if plan A doesn’t work, go to plan B,” he remarked.
Under Dhoni’s leadership, the Indian team experienced significant success, including winning multiple ICC trophies. Yuvraj credited coach Gary Kirsten for fostering a winning mentality within the squad during this time. “We had a really good coach, Gary Kirsten, who made us believe that we can actually win the World Cup,” he said.
Contrasting Approaches
Yuvraj contrasted Ganguly’s aggressive style with Dhoni’s more measured approach. While Ganguly was known for taking teams head-on with an assertive mindset, Dhoni preferred a calculated strategy that often involved contingency plans. This adaptability made Dhoni an effective leader during high-pressure situations.
“So it was… obviously Dhoni was a good captain as well. Saurav was more about being aggressive and trying to take teams head-on,” Yuvraj noted. This distinction highlights how both captains brought different strengths to their roles, shaping the team’s dynamics in unique ways.
Dhoni’s Retirement and Legacy
MS Dhoni announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket after an illustrious career that saw him lead India to victory in all major ICC tournaments. His last appearance was in IPL 2024, where he played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) under Ruturaj Gaikwad’s captaincy.
Yuvraj Singh himself retired from professional cricket in 2019 but continues to influence the game through coaching and mentoring young talents. His reflections on both captains underscore the diverse leadership styles that have contributed to shaping modern Indian cricket.
